EXTRAQT
EXTRAQT, founded in July 2021, is an engineering start-up with the ambition to boost our society towards sustainable heating and cooling. Our company focuses on aquathermal heating & cooling, a sustainable alternative to natural gas where heat pumps are used to extract thermal energy from surface water (rivers, lakes, canals) and provide buildings with heat/cold.
EXTRAQT develops energetic models (‘digital twins’) of rivers and lakes to estimate the potential of these sustainable thermal sources. Based on our feasibility studies, we design the technical concept for the aquathermal installation. Our digital twins and analyses always respect the boundaries of the waterbody’s ecosystem.
MISSION
50% of global energy consumption comes from heating and cooling, but only 14% is generated sustainably. A dominant renewable source is currently overlooked, even though 50% of the world population lives within 3km of it: surface water. An emission reduction of 65% is possible by sustainably harvesting thermal energy stored in rivers, canals, and lakes. To extract this energy, while preserving these essential sources of nature, detailed analyses are necessary. EXTRAQT uses digital twins of the waterbodies to create in depth thermal impact assessments and guide regions, cities, and institutions to make a step change towards sustainable heating and cooling.

HOW WE CREATE AQUATHERMAL REGIONS
STEP 1 : RIVER MODELING
A digital twin of the river is created. The river’s temperature is simulated based on the surrounding conditions
STEP 2 : REGULATION ASSESSMENT
The extraction regulation in the region is analyzed and can be further optimized together with the local government
STEP 3 : RIVER MODELING WITH HEAT DEMAND
First, the heat demands of the cities and villages next to the river are collected. Next, these heat demands are implemented in the river model to analyse the impact of the extraction
STEP 4 : OPTIMAL EXTRACTION CONTRIBUTION
Based on the simulated impact of extractions and the environmental regulations, an optimal distribution of energy extractions along the river is defined. Cities and villages now know the aquathermal potential for heating and cooling their houses

HOW WE CREATE AQUATHERMAL CITIES
STEP 1 : SCREENING
We analyse the potential of the city for aquathermal heating and cooling. This involves heat demand assessments and aquathermal sources (rivers and lakes) inventory
STEP 2 : NEIGHBORHOOD SELECTION
Based on the first screening, interesting neighborhoods are selected. The aquathermal energy potentials of these areas are analyzed in detail by river or lake models
STEP 3 : OBTAINING EXTRACTION PERMISSION
We go through the process of obtaining permissions for energy extractions
STEP 4 : PROJECT DEVELOPMENT
We develop a working concept to get the energy from the waterbody to the building(s) and contact the necessary companies for the installation

EXTRAQT creates digital twins of rivers that analyze the impact of heat and cold extractions of cities, villages, or buildings located next to the river. Regeneration of the river’s temperature after the subsequent extractions is modelled based on the time specific surrounding weather conditions. Impact results define an optimal distribution of energy extractions along the river.

First EXTRAQT screens the cities potential for aquathermal heating and cooling by analysing heat demands and connecting them to feasible aquathermal sources (rivers and lakes). Then the potential of the aquathermal sources is assessed based on impact modeling with river or lake digital twins. For rivers, the impact interconnectivity between different projects is also evaluated using CFD simulations. EXTRAQT also goes to the process of obtaining extraction permissions and designing the necessary aquathermal installations.

EXTRAQT analyses the energy potential of the waterbody by assessing aquathermal impacts. This also includes a TCO assessment of the estimated installation components. Using these assessments, permissions for heating and cooling extractions can be obtained from the government. EXTRAQT also designs a working concept and manages the installation.
