Herita is a Belgian non-profit organization that manages heritage sites in Flanders. Investing in monuments also means looking toward the future. As a responsible caretaker, Herita aims to embrace sustainability without compromising the cultural value of heritage. In 2024, an era of heating oil came to an end at Laarne Castle near Ghent. The old boiler had broken down, prompting the search for sustainable alternatives. Westerlo Castle was already equipped with an aquathermal heating system, which inspired Herita to consider the same technique for Laarne Castle. In collaboration with EXTRAQT, various heating technologies were thoroughly compared. Aquathermal heating emerged as the perfect choice: sustainable, invisible within the historic setting, and an ideal balance between ecology and economy. The decision to go for aquathermal heating was quickly made.

Our experienced installer Eco-Technix began work in the autumn of 2024. Heat exchangers were placed on the bottom of the castle moat, hidden beneath the water’s surface. EXTRAQT and Herita invite you to try and spot them! Meanwhile, the old oil boiler was removed from the boiler room and replaced by a modern heat pump. Pipes now connect the heat pump with the underwater heat exchangers, making aquathermal heating at Laarne Castle a reality.
Thanks to aquathermal heating, Herita can now and in the future heat efficiently and ecologically, without compromising the historical character of the building. Even on cold winter days, Herita can provide visitors a warm welcome – both literally and figuratively – thanks to aquathermal heating. They have already been warmed by the aquathermal heating. And the story does not end at Laarne Castle: we are already looking forward to the next chapter in the aquathermal heating journey.
